Scanner with limitations for Macintosh Users
I purchased the GT-S80 to replace my 1st generation Mac compatible Scansnap (fi-5110EOXM). I wanted a faster scanner (40 PPM vs 15) with better paper handling (less misfeeds according to at least one review comparing GT-S50 to Scansnap elsewhere.)
I used the GT-S80 for less than a day and returned it to Amazon. Here are the reasons why:
1. Speed. Even though the GT-S80 is rated at 40 ppm, when I load paper to scan and push the scan button, it would take about 15-20 seconds for the Epson utility that handles the scanning to activate and for the scan job to actually begin. Several sheets would feed quickly, then there would be a pause (several seconds) while the 5 or 6 sheets that had fed were being processed. Please note, I am using a 2009 Mac Pro 8 core 2.66 GHz Nehalem Xeon machine with 16GB of RAM. It's not a sluggish machine. The combination of the delay in starting and the pause each 5-6 pages significantly decreased any speed advantage the GT-S80 may theoretically...

GREAT SCANNER
I do not often give feedback on products but in this case I must. I bought this scanner based on the reviews I read and expected greatness.....
It exceeded my expectations.

FIRST: This scanner is lighting FAST! There is no comparison between this scanner and a Multifunction scanner. This scanner scans so fast that you really do not believe it actually scanned until you see the scanned document on your computer. It also scans both sides at once - so if you are doing duplex scanning - there is no delay in scan time for scanning both sides.

SECOND: It is exceptionally easy to set up and to use. I had it up and running in less than 5 mins. and have scanned hundreds of documents already.

THIRD: It is feature rich. (a) It allows you to scan to pdf (and other formats but I mainly use pdf) in several quality modes, many formats (color gray scale....)...., (b) you can program the keys on the scanner so you do not have to scan via the computer and...
Fast scanning; SLOW output
I have both the GT-S80 and GT-S50. They are only fast at 200dpi: the GT-S80 is very fast and exhibits no pause between pages while the GT-S50 pauses after every page. At over 200 dpi their speed is just average.

Slow software: even at 200 dpi; during and after the paper intake, the software noticeably lags and I am running a Dual 3.2 GHz Quad-core Xeon Mac Pro with a SSD drive, which is not too slow with other software. There are three distinct stages showing progress bars: 1.Scanning Page 2.Processing data please wait 3.Saving Page. If you scan multiple pages the 2nd stage repeats a few to many times, which may pause the scanner to pause multiple times.

Uneven color: Scanning solid color background results in very uneven color in the result.

Basementjack's comment to Danmoch Dan's review states that Apple's own Image Capture software is faster. I tried and found it not only is not faster but creates files almost 20 times the size of that from Epson's...
